On January 2nd-3rd, 2019, the 5th Management Science Symposium for Young Scholars was successfully held in Xiamen University, which was hosted by the School of Management, Xiamen University, the School of Management, Zhejiang University and Zhejiang Gongshang University and undertook by the School of Management, Xiamen University. About 60 young experts and scholars from dozens of different universities and colleges both domestic and abroad, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Singapore, Hong Kong and mainland, gathering together in Xiamen to launch academic communications in the form of paper reports and discussions, as well as the frontier subjects of industrial practices, jointly discuss about the frontier problems in order to seek for the cooperation opportunities.
In the morning of January 2nd, the opening ceremony of the 5th Management Science Symposium for Young Scholars was hold by Weifen ZHUANG, our teacher from Department of Management Science, School of Management, Xiamen University. At first, the chairman of the conference, Professor Di XU, the Vice-dean of School of Management, Xiamen University, addressed a warmly welcome speech, in which the professor expressed his best welcome and gratitude to the scholars attending the conference both domestic and abroad. Then, Professor Weihua ZHOU, Vice-dean of School of Management, Zhejiang University and co-chairman of the symposium, has briefly introduced about the symposium, and expressed adequate affirmation and praise to the successful opening of the symposium. Then Professor Xin CHEN, sponsor and president of the Institute, University of Illinois at the branch of Urbana-Champaign, USA, made a speech about the history and impact of the Institute. He shown his full affirmation to the School of Management, Xiamen University for hosting this symposium and expressed his gratitude on behalf of the Institute.
The articles reported by the young scholars in this symposium are closely related to the current frontier theories, academic topical points and social demand in the field of management science, including various fields of medical management, production and operation, revenue management, sharing economy and marketing .The opening report was presented by Dr. Yichuan DING, assistant professor at the University of British Columbia in Canada. Dr. DING reports his opinions from the perspective of the organizer, how kidneys are allocated among seriously ill kidney patients, namely, kidney sequencing. From the perspective of ethics and current policies, the simple and crude queuing way may not be able to fulfill Pareto Optimal State. The quality of the kidney source, the patient's personal physical conditions and other factors will impact the ultimate consequences of kidney transplantation.
The second report was presented by the assistant professor from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Dr. Xuan WANG. In the report, Dr. WANG introduced from the perspective of the flexibility of production line under the background of manufacturing so as to put forward the solving strategies for the flexible production questions which not only consider to maximize production but also to differentiate the price as for different groups of products.
Yongbo XIAO, an associate professor from Tsinghua University, presented the third report. The theme of the report was the revenue management of probabilistic sales, the related regions concerning revenue management and dynamic pricing. The purpose of this study is to put forward the following strategies: how to provide customers with a series of selection and a simple heuristic method when a retailer generates a probabilistic sales strategy with a limited number of products. As far as a seller is concerned, the improvement effects of a situation in which there are multiple probabilities for selling the product in contrast with just one probability for selling the product.
The fourth presentation was presented by Ning CHEN, assistant Professor from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Dr. CHEN introduced a method of non-parametric learning with only observable covariates and finally optimized the problems of finite stage decision under the circumstance of the unknown objective functions.
It is worth mentioning that Dr. Guanhua YAO, director of Xiamen Municipal Health and Planning Committee, came to attend the meeting during the lunch break in the middle process of the symposium. Director YAO shared with all the practice frontier and current situation of the innovative service model of "Internet + health care" in Xiamen. He also analyzed the management targets and key objectives of health informatization from the angle of managers, then introduced the solving concerns and implementation path of the project, and then reported the steady improvement of the medical management level and citizens' health in Xiamen with the help of a series of reform work.
Dr. Zhankun SUN, an assistant professor from the City University of Hong Kong, reported a study on how to assign priority to patients in the emergency room: first of all, Dr. SUN introduced the emergency treatment process in the emergency room of a hospital in Canada, and then proposed the main purpose of the study in report-the priority problem of patients.
Dr. Hai WANG, assistant professor from Singapore Management University, shared the research on the matching issue of shared transportation platform dispatch and demand with the attendants. He mainly took the key objectives of matching algorithm into consideration, including time matching problem, value of the orders, quality of the service, etc.
Dr. Renyu ZHANG, an assistant professor from NYU Shanghai, shared his research on the recommendation system on the platform with the attendants. After distinguishing recommendation system of the present platform according to the two dimensions of capacity limit and external reputation, taking whether the present recommendation system is fully applicable to different types of platforms into consideration and how to improve the design.
At last, Dr. Jingqi WANG, an associate professor from the University of Hong Kong, gave an academic report on the influence of the supplier enforcement of cross-licensing on the supply chain.
After all these academic reports and a lively discussion relevant to our topics, the 5th Management Science Symposium for Young Scholars was successfully came to an end. During the symposium, there were arguments, refutations, explanations and discussions, and more importantly, the excitement and emotion sparked after the collision of young ideas from all over the world. We believe that no matter where you live, there is no barrier between learning; No matter how different our background is, the question is the harvest; All the scholars have acquired a lot from the enthusiastic and unreserved attitude towards scientific research. We have reasons to hope that such discussions will provide a guide for the possible directions in the future. At present, it is in the opportunity period of management science development, and is also the golden period to climb the academic peak and seek for knowledge. Let’s look forward to another year, hopefully we will meet again soon.
